Three issues form our breeding decisions:
health
character
type
Those three issues are forming our breeding goals in exactly this order.

First priority is defintiely the health of the cat respectively the breed.
Because of that we avoid inbreeding and pay a lot of attention to the pedigree (respectively the coefficient of inbreeding) of our breeding cats.

Inbreeding can be a tool to intensify a desired type of cat a lot faster. Anyway,
we choose to not go this way, because inbreeding can harm the vitality and
robustness of the breed.
Especially because of concentrated inbreeding in the beginning of selective breeding of the Maine Coons that you can find in almost every pedigree if you look back far enough, we take care of wide matings with a low coefficient of inbreeding.
Furthermore an issue of health is beside the necessary immunizations and health checks the tests of hereditary diseases on a regular basis.
We don´t want to contribute that those diseases (HCM, PKD, HD) dispread more in the breed and do our very best to avoid that.
Unfortunately there are not complete safe tests on all diseases.
Our cats are tested on HCM (echocardiographic test) as well as PKD at the age of one to two years and on HD at the age of two to three years. Before breeding with a cat we make sure that this cat is free of the MybPC3-Mutation. We repeat the echocardiographic tests on HCM on a regular basis.
For the prevention of our cats we don´t want them to have more than one litter the year and in case of doubt we always will decide for the health of the cat and abstain from a litter or decide to neuter the cat.
We prefer alternative medicine (homeopathy), but our cats are also checked and, if necessary treated, by a classic veterinarian of course.
Good quality food is another issue of maintaining the health.

We think the character of the cat more important than the look because it is an
considerable contribution that this cat will have a good life.
A gentle serene cat has a better chance to be always loved than a shy, maybe scratching cat with bad habits. The last one might be easily a nuisance.
Maine Coons are very social and gentle as well as bubly cats. Our intenions are to breed serene kittenish Coonies who love to be cuddled.
To achieve that we pay attention to a couple of things:
First, there is the character of the parents. That means we will avoid breeding
with a too shy or anxious or too aggressive cat (such a cat wouldn´t feel
well in the group here anyway).
Second thing is the cat husbandry. Of course they live together with us like a family. Isolating the cat does only happen for a short time because of illness, heat of a cat or other special situations.
We take care that our cats are not too stressed (for example through too many cats living together in cramped confines). This means we are limited in the number of cats and this leads to a small size cattery.
Another important point is devotion - cuddeling and playing... and also in this point it becames difficult with a higher amount of cats to pay enough attention to each single one. We play and cuddle a lot with our cats and they are always around whatever we do.

The kittens get used to the human hand very early and this is the foundation for
kittenish babies who love to be cuddled and are dedicated to the contact with
people.
Important for that is also that we don´t release the kittens to their new homes earlier than at the age of 14 weeks, because they need to learn the social behaviour from her mom and the other cats. Cats that are seperated from their mothers earlier often have poor social skills.
Furthermore this way the kittens are able to ride the immunizations out, constitute at least a little immune protection and are not confronted shortly after the second immunization (which is considerable stress for their little organism) with losing mom, brothers and sisters, moving in a new home (with new viruses and bacteria that are different in every location) and being faced with new people and maybe new cats.

As a matter of course we pay attention on the breed standard and type of our breeding cats and we present them on shows to get them evaluated.
We think, if a cat does not reach at least a V1 and/or CAC on shows you need very good reasons to breed with it anyway (but there are reasons for that, for example foundation cats).
There is a wide range of types within the breed standard which is purely a matter of taste. Of course we decide for our fancy.
You won´t find Coonies with extreme type here, because we take no stock in this. We prefer the moderate and old type of the Maine Coon and we like a long bushy coat and the different silver variations. Because we will fall in love with cats having these features again and again, this will have impact on our breeding.
